Stiff competition, tight profit margins and volatile oil prices are forcing commercial aircraft and general aviation manufacturers to adopt more components produced from lightweight plastic and thermoplastic composites.
Today, modern aircraft incorporate many Celanese high-performance engineering polymers and material innovations into successful interior and exterior components that remain hard, impact-resistant, stiff and dimensionally stable – even when exposed to elevated temperatures and aggressive fuels – and can be 20 percent lighter than those made from traditional materials such as metal and light alloys.
Since 1982, when eight percent of the Airbus A130 consisted of composites, Celanese has worked with the commercial aircraft and general aviation industry to incorporate lightweight engineering polymers, performance fibers and thermoplastic composites that help them achieve their goals.
