1．*處理單元（CPU） 
CPU作為整個PLC的核心，起著總指揮的作用。CPU一般由控制電路、運算器和寄存器組成。這些電路通常都被封裝在一個集成電路的芯片上。CPU通過地址總線、數據總線、控制總線與存儲單元、輸入輸出接口電路連接。CPU的功能有以下一些：從存儲器中讀取指令，執行指令，取下一條指令，處理中斷。 
2．存儲器（RAM、ROM）
 存儲器主要用于存放系統程序、用戶程序及工作數據。存放系統軟件的存儲器稱為系統程序存儲器;存放應用軟件的存儲器稱為用戶程序存儲器；存放工作數據的存儲器稱為數據存儲器。常用的存儲器有RAM、EPROM和EEPROM。RAM是一種可進行讀寫操作的隨機存儲器存放用戶程序，生成用戶數據區，存放在RAM中的用戶程序可方便地修改。RAM存儲器是一種高密度、低功耗、價格便宜的半導體存儲器，可用鋰電池做備用電源。掉電時，可有效地保持存儲的信息。EPROM、EEPROM都是只讀存儲器。用這些類型存儲器固化系統管理程序和應用程序。
 3．輸入輸出單元（I/O單元） 
I/O單元實際上是PLC與被控對象間傳遞輸入輸出信號的接口部件。I/O單元有良好的電隔離和濾波作用。接到PLC輸入接口的輸入器件是各種開關、按鈕、傳感器等。PLC的各輸出控制器件往往是電磁閥、接觸器、繼電器，而繼電器有交流和直流型，高電壓型和低電壓型，電壓型和電流型。  
4．電源  
PLC電源單元包括系統的電源及備用電池，電源單元的作用是把外部電源轉換成內部工作電壓。PLC內有一個穩壓電源用于對PLC的CPU單元和I/O單元供電。 
5．編程器  
編程器是PLC的zui重要外圍設備。利用編程器將用戶程序送入PLC的存儲器，還可以用編程器檢查程序，修改程序，監視PLC的工作狀態。除此以外，在個人計算機上添加適當的硬件接口和軟件包，即可用個人計算機對PLC編程。利用微機作為編程器，可以直接編制并顯示梯形圖。
