兩個交流接觸器同時工作，它們的主觸點都閉合，必將造成電源短路。因比，為了保證兩個接觸器不同時工作，在控制電路中，串接了對方的常閉輔助觸點RMR和RMF，即把正轉接觸器RMF的一個常閉輔助觸點串接在反轉接觸器RMR的線圈電路中，而把反轉接觸器的一個常閉輔助觸點串接在正轉接觸器的線圈電路中。這兩個常閉觸點稱為聯鎖觸點。這樣一來, 當按下正轉起動按鈕SBF時，正轉接觸器線圈通電，主觸點RMF閉合，電動機正轉。與此同時，聯鎖觸點斷開了反轉接觸器RMR的線圈電路。因此，即使誤按了反轉起動按鈕SBR，反轉接觸器也不能動作。在同一時間里兩個接觸器只允許有一個在工作的控制作用稱為互鎖作用或聯鎖作用。

但是在正轉過程中要求反轉，必須先按停止按鈕SB1，讓聯鎖觸點RMF閉合后，才能按反轉啟動按鈕使電動機反轉，這樣一來，帶來操作上的不方便。為了解決這個問題，除了利用接觸器的動斷觸點進行電氣互鎖外，還可以利用復合按鈕觸點動作的先后順序不同進行機械互鎖。就是這種控制電路的輔助電路(主電路與前相同)。每一個復合按鈕都有一副動合觸點和一副動斷觸點，兩個啟動按鈕的動斷觸點分別與對方的接觸器線圈串聯。當按下正轉啟動按鈕SBF時，它的動斷觸點先斷開反轉接觸器的線圈電路；當按下反轉啟動按鈕SBR時，它的動斷觸點先斷開正轉接觸器的線圈電路。因此,采用這種復合按鈕，在改變電動機轉向時可以不必先按停止鈕，只要按下相應的另一起動按鈕即可。如果兩種互鎖方式同時采用，構成雙重互鎖，相互制約工作更為可靠。
